I'm an incoming Yale first-year and I want to push for a community where BIPOC students who don't have my privilege don't have to fear for their lives and safety on campus.

I’m signing because I am disgusted by the racialized divide perpetuated by the Yale Police Department!

I go to Yale and the YPD is an inefficient and racist system that has NO PLACE on a liberal arts college campus.

Policing, as we know it, has failed to ensure public safety for ALL members of our community. It has particularly, and repeatedly, failed to protect Black and Brown students at Yale. We are not satisfied with surface-level reforms or with bureaucracies conducting research into more bureaucracy. We are interested in real change. We are motivated by the promise of a peaceful revolution in policing and public safety not just at Yale or in New Haven, but in the United States writ-large. We want Yale to be a leader in this effort. We want Yale to reimagine and fundamentally restructure its public safety system (adopting best practices from other schools and cities across the world, where citizens are not brutalized by or fear the wrath of officious state power). We are more than capable of doing what is right, what is just, what is necessary, and what is, frankly, smart. Act boldly. Meet the moment.

As an alumnus, I think that the YPD makes white Yalies feel less a part of New Haven and makes Black and Brown Yalies worry about being aggressed in their home. YPD divides the university against itself.

Yale Police Department has the same goals as Yale Security, the same power as the New Haven Police Department, but, most importantly, none of their accountability or oversight.
