Help transgender people get the transitional treatment they deserve

Under the California Insurance Gender Non-Discrimination Act, it is unlawful for health insurance providers to deny transgender people coverage, or to modify the terms of the contract to discriminate a client because of their gender identity. However, the policy does not require health insurance policies to cover hormone therapy or other transition-related procedures unless they are deemed “medically neccessary”, meaning that if the provider does not think the procedures are needed for the patients physical wellbeing, they can deny their claim. Although some health insurance providers in the state of California provide plans that cover and reduce the cost of transitional procedures and treatments, others do not. All transgender people should have the opportunity to feel comfortable in their own bodies, and their health insurance providers should help them attain that comfort.
