On August 25th, in the port of Veracruz, it was reported that certain schools canceled their classes due to threats they received. These reports were spread through twitter, with the hashtag #verfollow. The reports caused a collective panic in the port of Veracruz. The Governor of the state, Javier Duarte Ochoa, mentioned in his twitter account that these rumors were false; moments after he announced that he had found the origin of the rumors and that this would have legal consequences. He cited an article from the Penal Code of The State of Veracruz and stated that this was terrorism. Several hours after, the Attorney General of The State of Veracruz arrested Gilberto Martinez Vera, (@gilius_22) and Maria de Jesus Bravo Pagola (@maruchibravo), journalist and former director of Artistic and Cultural Activities of the Ministry of Education of Veracruz. They are currently being held at the Pacho Viejo Prison. It has been stated that through torture and abuse they were coerced to confess to these crimes. This has caused various reactions, including a demonstration in front of the State Congress building in Veracruz. Due to the severity of these events, a call was made on Wednesday August 31, 2011 in representation of the state of Veracruz in Mexico City. A letter was delivered to the government of the state of Veracruz to demand the release of Maria de Jesus Bravo and Gilberto Martinez. Now we ask you to sign this letter and ask for the liberation of these two individuals, unjustly accused of the crimes of terrorism and sabotage. FREEDOM FOR MARUCHI BRAVO AND GILBERTO MARTINEZ!
Governor of the State of Veracruz-Llave Lic. Javier Duarte Ochoa
