FILTH OF TUGGERAH LAKES WATER SYSTEMn

Residents and visitors to the Central Coast think the state of the Tuggerah Lakes system – which includes Tuggerah and Budgewoi Lake, Lake Munmorah and their estuaries – is an Environmental Disgrace. Black ooze, piles of seagrass and stinky foreshores.
In the 1960’s the Lakes were packed with people day and night with swimming, sailing and prawning of a night time. Not anymore, which is a shame. Seeing the lakes all tidied up, we might even see some good tourist dollars come to our local shops. The council have to be kidding themselves if they think that they can pat themselves on the back.
Environmental campaigners are calling for a ban on licensed polluters in the Tuggerah Lakes system and more planning controls for developments around the catchments. We have got to manage what goes into the lake with 99 per cent of what goes in, staying in.
While the council is doing good work implementing the Estuary Management Plan through projects like restoring Canton Beach and Long Jetty foreshores, implementing artificial wetlands and putting in gross pollutant traps, this is treating the symptoms not the causes. On-going dredging strategy’s need to be implemented by the Wyong Council.
Urbanisation and population growth is leading to new developments in places like Wadalba where sediment run-off such as soil and organic material is getting into the lakes and natural wildlife corridors are being destroyed.
The Community Environment Network wants to see a long-term approach rather than a quick fix to address the problems.
