Concerned WJH parents started this petition to Wylie ISD administration and school board

As many of y’all have probably seen that it’s time to choose electives for 6th grade. In years past, students entering 6th grade have been allowed to choose from: Choir, Band, Theatre Arts, Art or several others.

We all know that electives are a crucial component in our students school year. In addition to empowering practical skills, electives can help our students find hidden talents or passions. In fact, several studies show that students are more likely to get a degree or major in a course they took as an elective. But the most crucial finding reflected in those studies also support that the ability of students to choose classes of their own is of the utmost importance. Students appreciate the ability to make a major choice in school and will make some students more receptive to the courses. It also helps to prepare them for future decision-making with regard to education and employment.

Right now the administration is asking for feedback in changing the electives format for our 6th graders next year. There is still some confusion but the way it's being discussed is that they are narrowing the electives choices to only band or choir while the other electives are divided up into 9 week intervals that will rotate. Many of our students have found great disappointment in this potential change.

If you are the parent of one of those upset students and would like the Wylie administration and school board to know please sign the petition. Also, please take the time to fill out the electives interest survey to insure the electives being offered represent our children's interests: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FJ7QPSV
