As pet lovers we all know and understand Lucys Law and if not to the letter of the wording what it means with regard to pet welfare.

I want sites like pets4homes and gumtree (gumtree) to be more accountable, to put more scrutiny and moderation and investigation for the ads they receive and allow to be placed for 'live' and 'vulnerable' young animals - this applies to cats too but seems to be particularly prevalent in dogs.

Lots of people are getting pups and then selling them on because suddenly they couldn't cope instead of going back to the breeder (usually they don't go back to the breeder because these people have bought from disreputable back yard breeders that are taking advantage of lockdown to selling off pups for many thousands of pounds to unsuspecting buyers who have no idea on the breed or requirements of the dog or intention of providing the care, input and training that such pups deserve.

These pups end up back on sites like pets4homes and gumtree for people to 'just get their money back' when if they bough from a reputable breeder the pup could be returned. People list excuses like going back to work, no time, shift has changed, new baby etc the list goes on which in some cases are genuine however this climate is encouraging unscrupulous back yard breeders to list pup after pup.

This is turning pups into a throwaway commodity and ultimately impacting on the welfare of the pups being passed around sometimes 5, 6 or even in bad cases 10 or 12 homes.

Please sign and share and lets get this petition under their noses however uncomfortable it might be for them.

nb the pup in the picture is 10 weeks old. bought and can no longer be looked after so the person advertising 'just wants their money back'
