Many people don’t know the cost of vaping and how badly it can affect their life in the future. Surveys conducted by the Truth Initiative showed that in 2017, 15.7% of high schoolers used an electronic vapor product within the last 30 days.

We are a class from Gruening Middle School in Eagle River, Alaska and we want you to help us make a change in our community. My class is taking part in Project Citizen. Project Citizen is an active-learning program through the Center for Civic Education that engages students in developing public policy for their communities.

Currently, the law in Anchorage and Alaska is that teens under the age of 21 are not legally allowed to have an e-cigarette or any other tobacco products in their possession. There is a problem between state law and the municipality of Anchorage code! Under state law a minor is ticketed, there is a fine, they have to appear in court, and their items are confiscated. Under city code there is no ticket, no fine, and Anchorage Police Department officers can’t confiscate items minors shouldn’t have.

Our class is trying to get the Anchorage Assembly to add back into city code community service and confiscation of vaping products as a consequence for minors in possession of tobacco and e-cigarettes in Anchorage. We hope you will support by signing and sharing this petition with your friends to help stop teen vaping.
