WVHS: Replace SEL Tuesdays with Tribe Time
After the return to in-person school, Waubonsie Valley High School implemented SEL Tuesdays to improve students' social and emotional learning. Many students have maligned this attempt as patronizing and a waste of time. So far, SEL Tuesday curriculum has consisted of: listing what we're grateful for, speaking theoretically about concepts such as accountability and responsibility, and opening a Google Drive folder (a skill many have known since elementary school).
For many students, especially upperclassmen, such a program is frustrating and insulting. Instead, many students benefitted from the Tribe Time program in place prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, in which students had the flexibility to meet teachers or complete homework. Such a program would allow students to become more responsible and accountable, the same goals the SEL program has failed at achieving. Students who attended WVHS prior to the pandemic can attest to how Tribe Time improved their communication with teachers and time management.
The transition would require a small change to the Wednesday schedule, but in return it would be a more productive use of teacher effort and student time.
