There are more than 200 types of cancer out there and only a few have a very effective cures. This year about 564,800 Americans are expected to die of cancer—more than 1,500 people a day. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US, exceeded only by heart disease. One of every four deaths in the US is from cancer. Since 1990, there have been approximately 5 million cancer deaths. Between 1991 and 1995, the national cancer death rate fell 2.6%.

The hardest thing to do is watch someone go through cancer, every day some part of them slips away. Imagine living a year or two in constant sickness and just waiting for the day that you finally disappear and leave the earth. It just broke my heart watching my mom go through all the stages of squamous cell carcinoma. I was eleven and watching your mom slowly slip away is tough for an eleven year old. Every morning I would wake up and wonder if my mom was going to die today. During her treatment I did all I could to stay strong and help her. I even went to a few of her doctor’s appointments. What causes cancer are things like genetics, the use of tobacco and smoking, diet and physical activity, SUV and even your behavior. If we raise the awareness of caner and what it can do to one’s body, then the death rate of cancer could decrease. Making cancer awareness might inspire young people to help support cancer research.
