A hurricane that can create havoc, death and destruction should not be named after the mother of Jesus for Christians. This is even worse if we think that they use the Spanish name when a high percentage of the people that can be affected by the storm are Spanish speaking Christians.
In the 1950's Atlantic storms' name lists were created. For Atlantic storms there are six lists that are rotated every six years. Names are now managed by the World Meterological Organisation in Geneva. Probably when Maria was chosen as a name for the rotating lists, the people that made these lists did not know that Maria in Spanish was the Mother of Jesus but it is surprising that after more than 60 years this organisation has not done anything to correct mistakes or change some of the names. This is specially true now that everyone is better informed about the terrible effects of these storms.
My petion is for the World Meterological Organisation to take Maria off as a hurricane name in the short term and in the long term for them to create new lists using only impersonal names.
