Sam Burns started this petition to World Health Organisation and

Countless black people and other ethnic minorities in the UK are being denied surgeries they need because the average BMI (body mass index) is not at all representative a healthy weight for they’re ethnic background. Links to articles exploring this is linked below but in summery, different ethnic minorities differ in natural muscle mass and curving of they’re body, however someone with more muscle and/or curves should not automatically be labelled as obese. Research into the healthy weight and BMI of each ethnic group should be conducted to give accurate averages.
One article linked from the national institute for health and care excellence states and explains that healthcare professionals should consider a lower body mass index when identifying the risk of weight-related conditions among people from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. This should be enforced and extended so that this is also a factor considered for surgeries as they’re are still black people being denied surgery based on the fact that they have an unhealthy BMI. This must change so black, Asian and other minority ethnic groups lives can be saved.
