Hi guys, I have just recently moved back to New Zealand from Australia working in the construction industry over there. I have seen nothing but poor site safety etiquette in most of my time back here. New Zealand is so far behind in the safety for our 245,600 construction workers. The ministry of business and innovation estimated it needs 515,000 construction workers to meet demands and it’s no wonder we can’t meet its expectations. I think there needs to be a spotlight on the construction industry here and a demand for change. We are forced to work in rain hail or snow in mud up to our knees and a cold to pass on to our families by the end of the day. Forced to work with our power tools that have been known to cause electrocution. Our tools can cost between $5000-$10000 which constantly need replacing due to damage from forced labour in the rain and mud. 2 people are dead while working on site in the past 4 months and last year an average of 41.7 people were seriously injured on site PER MONTH. (According to data.worksafe.govt.nz) If we chose not to work in the rain we are fired period. Australia has rules in place where if it starts raining on the job you have to stop working for the safety of their workers - unless there is a sheltered area in which works can commence safely. (I will also attach valid referrals) I think this could ultimately go viral considering construction and civil workers make up a good percentage of NZ’s employees.
