PETITION TO OPPOSE WORCESTERSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL’S SEVERE FUNDING CUTS TO DEAF, DEAF-BLIND AND HARD OF HEARING PEOPLE IN WORCESTERSHIRE

Deaf, Deaf-Blind and Hard of Hearing people were shocked when Worcestershire County Council announced that it will cut all financial grants that support them after 31st March 2019. This means Deaf Direct, based at Vesta Tilley House, Lowesmoor, Worcester WR1 2RS, as the only specialist agency, will be unable to provide support services effectively from 1st April.

The services are currently provided to people with a hearing loss, their families and carers, including deaf youth and their families, as well as advising other professionals who support these individuals.  Key services affected are the provision of vital information, advice and support such as regular drop-in clinics.  Related services that will also be affected are outreach work in the community, one to one support for youth and adults, assistive equipment for daily living, youth activities, sign language and lipreading training, Awareness of Hearing Loss courses and the provision of British Sign Language interpreters.

Without access to these services, there will be an increase in the number of people with a hearing loss suffering from unnecessary distress due to a lack of specialist information about their condition, access to equipment that greatly improves quality of life or advice on managing finances, debt and benefits, among other things.  Without early intervention, such issues can quickly escalate leading to depression and other mental health issues.  This is particularly important for deaf sign language users who often experience barriers when trying to access mainstream services as they require British Sign Language interpretation for them to access information and guidance in their preferred language.

Therefore, we are campaigning to get as many signatures to this Petition as possible. We hope you will support our cause, so making Worcestershire County Council aware of the serious consequences of their cuts.

Thank you so much
