Luke Hall started this petition to Woolworths

Recently, Aussie musician Jack River took to Instagram outlining the need for Channel 7 to support Aussie music in their Olympics coverage, stating that “Australian moments deserve Australian music”. There have been many months of cancelled gigs, resulted in decimation of the local industry and loss of income for every single artist and band. This petition is calling for Woolworths to increase the amount of homegrown music they play to support Aussie artists in their time of need.

It is not news that the Aussie music industry is on its knees. They have had little government support since the pandemic hit, and it is estimate that since 1st of July this year over 23,000 events have been cancelled. An estimated $200 million was reported to be lost in income last year (according to I Lost My Gig Australia).

They need our help.

Woolworths ‘cares for all Australians’; they say so themselves on a dedicated section on their website. Indeed, Woolworths makes a tremendous difference to lots of charitable causes it supports, and there’s no reason that they couldn’t support a group of Aussies doing it the toughest at the moment in the music industry.

While Jack River’s call for Channel 7 to play more music did succeed in gaining attention and adding Aussie music to more soundtracks on TV, it is the responsibility of all organisations to make Aussie music the soundtrack of our lives.

In periods of lockdown, the local supermarket is one of the only places Aussies can go, and it would make a huge different if we felt the same sense of pride listening to some fantastic new tunes at the shops from local talents as we doing watching our favourite sports stars on TV.

Recently Coles stated that they will add “even more amazing Aussie tracks to Coles Radio” in days to come, and there’s no reason Woolworths can’t up the stakes and do better.

We are calling for Woolworths to play 50% of their music from emerging and homegrown Aussie artists, most of who are currently producing music supporting the diverse range of music that is some of the best in the world. We want music from Indigenous artists, musicians across all genders, up & coming artists from all backgrounds, and our favourite independent bands.
