This petition outlines a community issue faced in Maryhill and the actions we are calling for to our local government leaders.

I am sure you are well aware of the scores of communter traffic faced in our town daily. So many of these vehicles choose to speed through our village with absolutely no regard for the speed limit or pedestrian traffic on the road - which largely includes seniors, families and children!

One of the great things about Maryhill is also part of the downfall - being central to Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph and Cambridge, making us a perfect short cut for commuter traffic. Reality is we cannot stop the scores of weekday traffic and transport trucks from using our village as a timesaving short cut. What we shouldn't accept is the lack of any intervention whatsoever through the addition of traffic calming strategies. With the current level of dangerous and speeding driving that happens on our streets there should be some sort of traffic calming modifications in place. Currently we have none.

At this time there are sidewalks on most main streets in Maryhill. St. Charles West and East as well as Maryhill Rd N. The section of Maryhill Rd S - from the main intersection and headed out of town towards Guelph - does not have a sidewalk, forcing pedestrians to walk on the road alongside speeding traffic. Cars and trucks speed in and out of town daily - especially through St. Charles St E and Maryhill Rd S.

Let's fight for:

  • speed display signs installed on Maryhill RD and St. Charles ST
  •  installation of a sidewalk on Maryhill Rd S - all other main streets in town have sidewalks and the need for one on Maryhill Rd is much overdue
  • open discussion regarding other traffic calming measures that could be introduced (ie. speed bumps, stop signs, lowering speed limit etc.)

Let's work together and show our local government that we all feel the need for the introduction of traffic calming measures to help solve this issue for the next generation of Maryhill residents. With your help, we can demand action from our community leaders to find a solution that will help "Maryhillians" feel safe walking all of our streets.
