Why this petition matters

Started by Oge Odidika

Women won’t be equal anywhere until they’re equal everywhere, including in the media. Sexualization and objectification of women became increasingly popular in the twentieth century on television, in films, in advertising, and in music videos. Women's physical appearance, body image, behavioral standards, and beauty have long been portrayed in the media in a false and artificial light. We can witness hypersexualized and unrealistically flawless female bodies today on television, billboards, glossy magazine pages, and social media. The detrimental effect of hypersexualization for girls and women include anxiety about appearance, feelings of shame, eating disorders, lower self-esteem and depression.

Objectification of women in media  can be ended through various small steps. This can include giving more women more nuanced roles. Roles outside of the typical wife, mother, daughter or sex object, and more women as leaders and professionals.

Please sign our petition to help us combat the media objectification of girls and women by aiming to improve gender representation in films, to stop stereotyping girls and women, and to create diverse female characters in entertainment!
