Women in the US Military Should Not "Expect" To Be Raped

On February 12, Fox News contributor Liz Trotta said, on air, that women in the military should “expect” to be raped.

Trotta cited as evidence a new Pentagon report on sexual abuse in the military that shows a dramatic increase in rapes and sexual assaults since 2006. In her words: “I think they have actually discovered there is a difference between men and women. And the sexual abuse report says that there has been, since 2006, a 64% increase in violent sexual assaults. Now, what did they expect?

What they expect is to be treated with respect and given the honor and dignity they have earned by serving their country. What they do not expect is to be raped or sexually assaulted simply because of who they are.

The fact is rape and sexual assault in the military is at epidemic proportions. The Department of Defense estimates that over 19,000 such incidents occurred in 2010 alone but that only 13.5% of sexual assaults are ever reported. The DOD also reports a 58.5% increase in sexual assaults at its service academies in the last year.

For Ms. Trotta, though, these stunning statistics are merely further evidence that the fundmanental problem is in fact women serving in the military. In her words: “So, you have this whole bureaucracy upon bureaucracy being built up with all kinds of levels of people to support women in the military who are now being raped too much.

Women serve with honor and distinction in the United States military every day, performing dangerous and vital duties. They defend and protect us – and it’s our responsibility to protect them.

We demand that Fox News immediately dismiss Liz Trotta and issue an apology to every woman serving in the armed forces of the United States.

Tell Fox News: Women in the US Military Should Not "Expect" To Be Raped

On February 12, Fox News contributor Liz Trotta said, on air, that women in the military should “expect” to be raped.

What they expected was to be treated with respect and given the honor and dignity they have earned by serving their country. What they did not and do not expect is to be raped or sexually assaulted simply because of who they are.

The fact is rape and sexual assault in the military is at epidemic proportions. In her words: “So, you have this whole bureaucracy upon bureaucracy being built up with all kinds of levels of people to support women in the military who are now being raped too much.

By Ms. Trotta’s logic, women volunteering to wear the uniform of the United States, serving in war zones and in dangerous situations around the world, who are putting their lives at risk to protect us – are actually asking to be raped.

Women serve with honor and distinction in the United States military every day, performing dangerous and vital duties. They defend and protect us – and it’s our responsibility to protect them.

We demand that Fox News immediately dismiss Liz Trotta and issue an apology to every woman serving in the armed forces of the United States.
