Anna Stewart Kenkel started this petition to Woluwe-Saint-Pierre and

Brussels’ smallest International School Roots and Wings threatened with closure by Parc Parmentier management. Municipality and region do nothing.

For 11 years, the small and beloved International school Roots and Wings in leafy Parc Parmentier has been giving children from the international community a wonderful start to their education. The school’s pedagogy focuses not only on the academic curriculum but on the social and emotional development of students. At Roots and Wings, all children have a place to grow; also when they have special needs such as children on the autism spectrum and children with learning disabilities, which is the case for around 1 in 5 students.

Key to their success: the outdoor teaching methods and contact with nature in the woods & park surrounding the school, which offers the children a safe environment and stimulates them to rise above themselves and beyond their limitations. The school has with great success offered an important educational refuge for the children of numerous Brussels expats who cannot access adequate education in the Flemish or French-speaking system.

This will come to an end on June 25. During the pandemic, after 11 years of presence in the park Parmentier, the school was told by the park management that the lease would not be renewed this year. And so, in less than a month, the children are literally put out on the street; without prospects and without a school for the new school year. Repeated requests for help to Benoit Cerexhe, mayor  of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre were to no avail.
"We were given a number to call; and they had no real options. If the park doesn't reconsider, I'm afraid this is it. In the middle of the lockdown, it was impossible to find a new location," says Soraya Yavari, director of Roots and Wings.

This is why the school's management has now in a last-ditch effort turned to Brussels Prime Minister Rudi Vervoort and the Brussels Parliament as Parc Parmentier is property of the Region Bruxelles-Capitale, to prevent these children from ending up on the street.

"If they do nothing, the school will have to close on June 25. The park management wants us to leave for unclear reasons, Woluwe-Saint-Pierre couldn't or wouldn't do anything; so they are really our last hope."

Please show your support for our school by signing this petition.

Thank you!
