Retain Wokingham Market Place & Denmark Street as the Roads that they are.

Wokingham Borough Council have just started a trial of closing Denmark Street (therefore Market Place) on Fridays & Saturdays on the premise it’s just for social distancing.

It seems no thought has been given to the independent businesses in Denmark Street or Market Place that do not have rear access for deliveries.

Over the past 4 years the businesses in this area have suffered a lot & closing these roads will kill the businesses off, we have already lost one during Covid-19.

Wokingham is an old market town that has always had roadways of a sort here & to try to turn the area into a piazza so that people can eat & drink outside, or walk without care of traffic, is ridiculous in our climate.

On a separate note, as a disabled parking permit holder I would definitely struggle without the central disabled bays in Market Place as walking too far is debilitating for me.

Only a few years ago a lot of money was spent on the Market Place in the regeneration which effected Denmark Street whilst the businesses there saw no benefit. If the area is pedestrianised more money will be spent & fairly new work will be dug up. More money wasted!

The traffic will be horrendous (even more so) if a major road such as Denmark Street is closed, this will have a knock on effect on the residential roads within the town.

Our town centre is being killed off & it’s charm lost.

Please sign this petition in the hope we can stop the stupidity before Wokingham Borough Council do more damage!
