Remove companion from non-rotating formats
The companion mechanic is a mistake that is detrimental for non-rotating formats in Magic: The Gathering. This petition requests that Wizards of the Coast acknowledges this mistake and does not wait to correct it by promptly removing the companion mechanic from non-rotating formats, for the following reasons:
1) It is bad for the diversity of the game. A very few cards now heavily influence deck building and gameplay strategies in formats from standard to vintage.
2) The abilities of the companion cards aren’t integrated into existing strategies; rather, decks are modified to exploit these cards’ abilities. Cards are now included primarily or solely because of their relevance to the companion. Thus, the companions narrow the focus of deckbuilding and strategy – they take up too much of the conversation.
3) It fundamentally changes the structure of these formats. It is not merely a new mechanic that is being incorporated into the formats, but rather the formats adapt to the mechanic. A companion essentially starts in the command zone, with very few ways to address it until it is cast.
4) The deck building restrictions of the companions don’t require much change for certain decks, which creates disproportionate advantage for them. The companion is simply included as an extra card-in-hand without any drawback.
