The Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC) has always allowed people who are incarcerated to order from multiple vendors to obtain essential items from the commissary or canteen within state correctional institutions. In an unprecedented move, DOC has removed that choice, now only allowing them to order from a single vendor. This policy decision creates a monopoly, eliminating competition and setting the stage for exploitation. DOC has for over 30 years respected the Wisconsin Administrative Code by making sure that incarcerated people and their families had multiple vendors to choose from to prevent unfair business practices and ensure availability. The new policy eliminates choice and competition and will ultimately harm the corrections community and Wisconsin families supporting their loved ones. With this new policy, if the single vendor has high prices, long waits, limited supplies, or poor customer service, there will be no alternative. They are held hostage as consumers. Additionally, this decision puts a 60-year-old Milwaukee business and well-respected vendor at high risk of shutting down, jeopardizing Milwaukee jobs, further destabilizing a community, and eliminating a community-based option to purchase these goods in person. The needs of incarcerated people, their families, Wisconsin taxpayers, and the Milwaukee community were ignored in the decision-making process. What serves the state best has always been and continues to be multiple vendors and consumer choice. We need your help. If we do nothing, incarcerated persons in Wisconsin will be forced to order ALL property and hobby items ONLY from a single vendor (California-based Union Supply) after September 30th. The State of Wisconsin DOC will not allow incarcerated people or their families to order from Milwaukee-based Jack L. Marcus after that date. This would also end any opportunity for in-person ordering. If incarcerated people are not satisfied with prices, products, or services from Union Supply, they will have no other options. This DOC decision will also threaten the survival of Jack L. Marcus, a Midtown Milwaukee company known for good service, fair prices, jobs, and community opportunity. Eliminating competition is NEVER good for customers, and this move further threatens to eliminate local jobs and economic activity that are badly needed by the Midtown Milwaukee community. TAKE ACTION! If you are as concerned as we are about this decision, PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION to ask Governor Evers and the DOC to reverse their decision. TELL THEM that you want more than one choice and that Midtown benefits from having Jack L. Marcus as part of the community. Every signature will help. Thank you for your support! ONE CHOICE IS NO CHOICE!
