Forward for Public School Advocacy started this petition to State Representative Jessie Rodriguez and

The Joint Finance Committee slashed about 90% of Governor Evers’s proposed investments in public education in the 2021-23 state budget. In doing so, they failed Wisconsin kids and jeopardized our schools' eligibility for promised federal aid to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.

It's not too late to fix this - the proposal now goes before the entire legislature for modification and debate. Members of the Senate and the Assembly still need to vote on this budget, and they have the opportunity to correct the mistakes made by Joint Finance and close the gaps for Wisconsin students.

With the revenues that the state has available, we have an historic opportunity to support our students and move our state forward. What was passed by the Joint Committee on Finance, is not the Wisconsin way. Our state can afford to close the gaps that exist in our state for kids and public schools - and we can't afford not to!

Please sign this petition to tell our state legislators to do their job by rejecting this budget and invest in the future of our communities by passing a public education budget that includes:

1) a minimum base $200 per-pupil increase for every student, not a 0% increase as proposed;
2) ensuring that the state’s funding model meets the basic definition of maintenance of effort, which will allow us to access the ESSER federal dollars;
3) a sum-sufficient increase for special education funding, meeting a minimum of 30% reimbursement, not the status quo.
4) allocating the earmarked $350 million to ensure state special education costs are not depleting school general funds, which is currently proposed at the same level as the previous budget with no allowance for inflation costs; and
5) specific increases in support for English Language Learners who number over 55,000 statewide.

Let's let them know we're expecting them to do the right thing for Wisconsin's children.

Thank you!
