The Medical Career Program was recently brought back to Winthrop High School for the first time in thirty years. Sandra Hurley RN, MBA, N-E, BC, and Jeanne Holgerson RN, BSN, BA have generously donated their time and knowledge to teach in the brand new Winthrop High School in response to a student/community request. It was understood that the Medical Career program would be funded after the first year, however there is no money in the school budget to continue the program for next year. The Medical Career Program is a two year course designed for Juniors and Seniors who will receive their certification as nursing assistants, providing them with entry level employment. Sandra and Jeanne have created articulation programs with local community colleges, that will guarantee entry into colleges fulfilling college credit. The second year of the program students will be trained on-site at local hospitals learning the CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) role. We are looking to generate community support to save the Medical Career Program. We plan on attending the May 22nd school committee meeting at the Neil Shapiro Center for Performing, Winthrop High School at 6:00pm. If you are unable to attend this meeting to support this program, please email or call school committee representatives to generate support for this program. Please sign our petition to save the Medical Career Program.
