We the undersigned call on the Windsor Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) to immediately implement a plan to test workers at the farm gate, with a comprehensive plan of care for those who are COVID positive. Resources need to be diverted to the farms to address the crisis immediately, ensuring the protection of the health and safety of farm workers.

Windsor-Essex currently has 280 migrant farm workers with COVID-19 and 2 workers have died. These cases span 17 different locations, many with substandard housing with an inability to protect themselves due to the congregate nature of their living conditions.

Windsor-Essex must help these workers who have risked their lives to come to Canada to help keep our food supply strong. It is a matter of protecting their human rights.

The assessment centre model isn’t working. Workers are fearful of asking to be tested and also getting COVID. Testing must be delivered at the farm gate in conjunction with farm owners.

Windsor-Essex takes pride in the food we grow, it’s time for us all to do the right thing and help vulnerable migrant farm workers by insisting on a plan to immediately begin testing at the farm gate. The WECHU along with the Board of Health need to step up to help protect the health and well being of these workers and our communities.
