Every year, 8 million metric tonnes of plastic enter our oceans. Carried on oceanic currents, it combines within gyres to create garbage patches larger than countries. It endangers the lives of every marine species, at every depth in the water column. And there is no one else to blame for this, except humans.

Since the release of Blue Planet II, the world has finally woken up to the plastic plague. Major corporations and governments have finally been put under the spotlight and face pressure to reduce their plastic waste. Campaigns have started up across the world, hashtags have been shared: all to raise awareness of the issue. Consumers are fully aware of the impact that they’re having and want to make a difference, however they can.

Wimbledon is celebrated amongst a variety of sporting fans every year. But this year, many have taken notice of how the players seem to be drinking from single-use Evian bottles. There is no excuse for this. Why can they not drink from reusable bottles? Why, when we are well aware of the plastic impact on our oceans, is this still being allowed?

This must be changed. There are viable alternatives. There is no good reason anymore for this ignorance.

Our oceans are suffocating because of things like this. 150+ plastic bottles litter UK beaches every year. Around 100,000 marine mammals and turtles, alongside 1 million seabirds, are found to have been killed by plastic pollution annually. It’s unsightly and it’s deadly.

Wimbledon, you are contributing to this problem.

The ball is in your court. What will you do?
