Helen Holland started this petition to Wiltshire Council

As people have started to talk about Christmas... and who should switch the lights on,which may not be an issue...

This year we are suffering some serious issues, with many new rules fabricated by Atkins who are the consultants to Wiltshire Council - Nobody really knows what they do or why they are needed, but these are the people behind hideous plans of the Campus which they redo and reinvoice every few months, why your street lights go off in the middle of the night just when you need them, and essentially anything badly planned out or wasting money across Wiltshire.

In an attempt to stop Melkshams Christmas Lights as we know them they have created new rules which disallow many things, seemingly designed to stamp out the voluntary setup we have in Melksham, which we have been told by their own engineers is exactly what they want to do, with some leaked documents and emails pretty much confirming this.

Most critically the Strings that cross the roads are no longer allowed - they have been a major part of the display for 30+ years, with the only major change being the string have dropped significant amounts of weight in that time, now being feather light - and the columns they attach to are all reasonably new, so the ageing fragile Street light argument doesn't work.

In that 30+ years not once has one of those strings in the various guises fallen down or caused any incident.

We have a whole stack of grievances with Atkins, and specific members of their team who have been proven to single Melksham out with a huge file of evidence dating back nearly a decade. This is currently in the hands of Wiltshire Council and an independent body looking at some questionable activity by them BUT as these new rules were adopted by Wiltshire Councils Cabinet without any question as we stand there will be no lighting across the streets and quite possibly through the town itself, with the only areas away from their control being the Town Hall and Tree.

We are working to resolve this, but with a majority of our Councillors, and Wiltshire Council staff doing their best to brush this one away we need some support from the very people who enjoy what we do each year - and as time flys by wanted to give an explanation for why many of the things that would normally be well under way by now haven't been mentioned yet.
