Make S 3rd St safer for pedestrians, drivers and residents by installing stop lights
Why this petition matters
We are requesting NCDOT & the City install stop lights on S 3rd St between Market St and Castle St to reduce speeding in order to
· reduce property damage,
· improve pedestrian safety, particularly at the Ann St Crosswalk
Why lights?
In the average week, over 2100 cars are traveling over 45 miles per hour in this historic residential neighborhood, based on a study conducted by the City this summer
As speeding has been recognized as a major cause of accidents, in 2020, there were 51 accidents or roughly one per week on S 3rd St between Market and Castle based on WPD reports. This is a fraction of the total accidents of cars hit as some are not reported to the police. These accidents have resulted in
o Damage to vehicles
o Damage to homes and properties
o Personal injury to drivers as well as pedestrians
The sole crosswalk at Ann & 3rd is ineffective and dangerous because the majority drivers do not stop for the flashing yellow lights.
o A woman was recently hit in this crosswalk in broad daylight with yellow lights flashing.
The crosswalk is used by school-age children, elderly, visitors and is part of the City’s bike path from the river to the sea.
