I find it astounding how hard it is for those suffering with Mental Illness to find the help they need, this morning thanks to an Erectile Dysfunction commercial, I decided something needed to change. I learned Erectile Dysfunction drugs are more accessible thanks to new "online chats" with Doctors. We find Erectile Dysfunction as a society more important than the status of our Mental Health. Are there 43.8 million people a year in America suffering with Erectile Dysfunction? I only ask because that is the amount of Americans who suffer with Mental Illness every year. These people who are suffering could be Mothers or Fathers who are raising the next generation, returning army vets, Sisters, Brothers, Grandparents, Aunts & Uncles, Cousins, Friends... It is not fair that accessible and affordable Mental Health help is so far fetched. When you sit down at your Doctors office the first question the nurse asks me is "if I've had depressive symptoms or have thought of suicide recently", my family Dr. felt confident enough to keep me on Zoloft for six years of my life as long as I continued to pay them a co-pay every 6 months. There was no discussion of why I should or shouldn't be on this medication long term or that it can actually change the chemical makeup of my brain. When I had a nervous break down I went to the same family Dr. who told me they could do nothing and made me make an appointment with a Psychiatrist who then made me make an appointment with their therapist and it took me over a month to get an appointment. This is how drug addicts begin. Those who are suffering with mental health issues are seeking help, they can't receive it or afford it so they seek out other options. Most Psychiatrists do not take health insurance or the co-pay is outrageous. I have no children and make nearly $50,000 a year and struggle to seek therapy every two weeks. My co-pay is MORE WITH INSURANCE. If I walked in off the street and had no insurance it would cost me $60.00, my co-pay on my insurance for a "specialist" is $80.00. Doctors who are helping keep us sane shouldn't be considered  "specialists". If your Mental Health isn't on point it is very rare that your physical health is. One should not be more important than another. We need to realize how important mental health is and how imperative it is to society that we fix this.
