Sandy Gonzalez started this petition to William Floyd School Board

The William Floyd School District is proposing to increase the school day at the middle school level by adding a built-in academic support class in the form of a ninth period. The purpose of this is in part to allow the opportunity for all students to have a lunch period. The district also originally proposed to end all extra-help in lieu of this ninth-period.

Several issues arise...

1. On the press release the district chose to highlight that "currently 946 middle school students do not have a dedicated lunch period". They clearly failed to mention that many of these students are double performers or AP students with extra classes AND that ALL STUDENTS EAT LUNCH. This was a direct attempt at word manipulation to insinuate that these students are not eating lunch. The proposition is simply allowing students to have designated cafeteria time.

2. The district mentioned to staff that there will be NO EXTRA HELP and teachers will not get paid for staying after the ninth-period day to provide extra-help to students. Then a few days later on 2/1/19, upon receiving backlash from the community once this information went public and IN COMPLETE CONTRADICTION TO WHAT WAS STATED AT THE FACULTY MEETING, the district put out a press release on the middle school websites with the following statement: "The district is also proposing additional after-school homework support/make-up work for core subjects (one hour)."

3. Currently, extra-help is being used by students to help make up work/tests, study with their teachers, or make up band lessons/gym classes. Once this is gone, students will only receive help in their core subjects (per the district press release). Students will not be able to receive additional support in subjects such as Foreign Language (which students receive H.S. credits for) or make up lessons for non-core subject classes.

4. Currently in the new WFSD Teacher contract teachers are not obligated to stay after the end of a ninth-period day. Therefore, there is no guarantee that there will be the staff available for the proposed "homework help" and there is no guarantee that the students will receive help from their own classroom teachers.

We are a tight community and our children matter! We need to make sure that the district does not take away our extra-help that has been so crucial this year for so many of our children and their academic success! The students that are struggling are able to get extra time to finish assignments and work closely with their teachers. The high-performing students are able to come home and focus on their extra curricular activities because they took advantage of getting most of their work done after school. It gives an opportunity for students to take ownership and accountability for their academic success by giving them the responsibility to choose which content area may need some additional focus for that given day.

Don't be FOOLED by the information that the district is putting out! They are using word manipulation in order to confuse the masses. Let's show them we care and that our voices matter!

Please join me in signing this petition so we can bring it to the BOE Meeting on Tuesday 2/12/19 and show them that we want extra-help to stay! Allow the students to continue to have EQUAL ACCESS to ALL OF THEIR TEACHERS on ANY GIVEN DAY!
