Annika Veroni started this petition to Wilfrid Laurier University Administration

This is a list of Laurier Students who feel for one way or another that going back to full in-person learning is not optimal for a multitude of reasons.

Including but not limited to: COVID safety, lack of transportation, lack of housing, physical learning impairments, anxiety regarding return, COVID worry of contraction or transmission, concern of unsafe learning environment.

As students we understand that the university is tasked with the near impossible of making a decision that will be seen as beneficial for everyone involved in the university. There are people who are excited for the return for in person activities. However, this list composes those who feel very much the opposite. As students we understand the reason for being at university is to better our understanding of our designated fields of study. It's safe to say that any professor that you ask will insist that lecture attendance is essential to learning in any course. However, this now raises a new type of concern, that is COVID screening and Public Health Restrictions. Any student or faculty member who is symptomatic or tests positive is required to isolate as to minimize the spread of the virus. The dilemma in this situation is that a student can neither test positive or be symptomatic and still acquire the learning from lectures that is so essential to overall understanding. This could promote the falsification of COVID screening results thus furthering unsafe COVID practices among a population that is already at a higher risk of transmitting this virus. Furthermore, there is potential for this being a disability rights issue. The lack of accommodation on behalf of the school directly impacts disabled and chronically individuals who must now risk their lives to go to class. The Ontarians with Disabilities Act requires institutions to accommodate disabled people, and the University isn't

We are proposing that a mixed format return be offered; where those who wish to attend in-person and are able (e.g., not symptomatic, or positive) can, and those who do not wish to attend in person for reasons of their own discretion or physical inability (e.g., symptomatic, or positive) may still acquire the invaluable information that is provided during lectures in a recorded online format.
