TELL WILD ABUNDANCE TO SPARE TWO SHEEP!
Wild Abundance, a homesteading business near Asheville, North Carolina, has organized a do-it-yourself “humane” sheep slaughter class November 19-20. They frame their slaughtering of two defenseless animals as “sacred” and “honoring” them, while they literally cut their lives short.
Regardless of how the sheep are raised -- or the language and rituals accompanying the killing process -- the needless taking of innocent lives is cruel and inhumane.
Furthermore, cultivating affection and emotional bonding with animals before killing them is not kindness -- it is a betrayal. By mainstreaming and putting a seemingly ethical face on do-it-yourself, backyard slaughter, Wild Abundance is reinforcing the myth that slaughtering animals is necessary and compassionate.
Proponents claim that familiarity and participation in slaughter instills sensitivity to the animals who are killed for food. But to the contrary, the normalizing of such atrocities as natural events and cause for celebration hardens kindness into callousness. It’s not enough to be better than a factory farm. Wild Abundance has the opportunity to set an example of true sustainability, compassion, and justice by halting their classes that harm and kill animals.
Please ask Wild Abundance to cancel its do-it-yourself slaughter classes and to let us bring the two sheep to a local animal sanctuary for a life-time of love and care!

Dear Natalie and Wild Abundance,
We are impressed with the space you have created and many of the skills you are cultivating through Wild Abundance. We have strong roots in Asheville, and, like you, we aspire to cultivate greater awareness around sustainable living and ethical treatment of animals.
We were thus deeply disturbed to learn that Wild Abundance is teaching “humane slaughter” classes that are framed as “sacred” and “honoring” of animals by killing them -- quite literally cutting their lives short. I ask that you reconsider the upcoming Cycles of “Life” sheep slaughter class in November and other classes that similarly use/abuse animals.
We understand that you view such classes as offering animals a better life than factory farming, but certainly this is not true relative to letting animals live out their full lives in peace. By mainstreaming and putting a seemingly kind and ethical face on hands-on, DIY slaughter (especially among hobbyists and amateurs), Wild Abundance is reinforcing and normalizing the myth that there is something humane about unnecessarily taking innocent lives.
Cultivating affection and emotional bonding before killing animals is not kind as it is portrayed. It is a heartbreaking betrayal of their trust in you as their caretaker. The main difference between killing happy, healthy dogs and killing happy, healthy sheep is that the former is widely considered horrific and is actually a felony in most states, while the latter is promoted as compassionate by businesses such as Wild Abundance.
Objective health advisory boards in the U.S. and worldwide -- including the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics -- recognize that plant-based diets are nutritious and appropriate for all age groups. As there is no “need” to consume animal flesh or secretions, the unnecessary killing of animals is an inherently violent abuse of power regardless of how the animals are raised or the language and rituals that accompany the killing process.
We hope to see the Asheville community move more in the direction of animal-free permaculture and true compassion in bonding with nature and animals.
