We are calling on Wigan Council to begin a consultation exercise with local residents, shoppers and town centre business owners to look at ways to improve traffic management and road safety in Ashton Town Centre.
In particular we want Wigan Council to look at :-
The creation of a new Town Centre Zone in Ashton Town Centre that gives priority to shoppers, business, residents and public transport. The suggested perimeter of the zone is as follows – Warrington/Liverpool Rd junction (Kings Arms) down Bryn St to Wigan Rd, right towards Gerard St. Right onto Gerard St up to Liverpool Rd (Kings Arms).
That the Town Centre Zone operates a partial one-way traffic management system for all vehicles as follows – One way up Gerard St from Bolton/Wigan Rd. One way down Bryn St towards Wigan Rd from junction Warrington/Liverpool Rd.
All HGV’s are prohibited to enter the Town Centre Zone between the hours 8.00 am to 7.59 pm each day. HGV’s are permitted to enter Town Centre Zone between the hours of 8.00 pm to 7.59 am each day.
That further road safety improvements are made in the Town Centre Zone that gives safety priority to shoppers, residents and visitors including use of additional and enhanced pelican crossings, improved footpaths, better pedestrianisation etc.
The outcomes would be :-
A safer Ashton town centre for shoppers, business and residents.
The saturation of Ashton town centre with HGV’s will stop and will no longer be used as a short cut during busy periods.
Better flow of traffic through Ashton town centre to ease congestion.
Less pollution in Ashton town centre.
