Blair Carey started this petition to Wicomico County Council

John Henry Winder was a general in the Confederate Army who fought for the cause of White Supremacy and to keep slavery over inferior races. In fact, during the civil war Winder had command of all military prison camps- including the notorious Andersonville Prison Camp where 13,000 Union prisoners of war succumbed to mistreatment, malnutrition, and disease. This is in fact a war criminal that could draw comparisons  to Hitler for his actions. It is very easy to believe that if he did not die of a heart attack 2 months before the end of the civil war he would have been tried for his crimes of inhumanity.

Here, in Wicomico County in front of the city of Salisbury Courthouse we have a plaque in honor of him. Is this even real??? Why? This man was born in Nanticoke, MD and died in Baltimore, MD ; he had no impact to this area in any of his service to the Army or in life itself.

Although this may be history, this marks an ugly time for our country. A time where human bondage and slavery existed. Why do we need to honor a person who fought for these things to stay in place? Why do we need to honor him in this community, where he had zero relevance?

This monument stands too close to the spot where black Americans were kept waiting to be sold off to the highest bidder in the late 1800s. It is also a stones throw from the spot a young man was lynched in 1931 by a mob of white Salisbury residents.

This is a NON PARTISAN argument, this is a human rights and equality issue. Why do we continue to hang a sign that symbolizes hatred, social injustice, and racism? For many of our citizens it brings anger and offends them to their core; it is symbolic of white supremacy and in today's world we don't need symbols of hatred to our fellow man. We as a country and humans need to simply do better.

For those of you that serve our country please understand this petition is not a disrespect to your service. This petition is for the very people you fought for. Every single person in this country should be able to look at the flag and feel that we are all united underneath it. Things like this Winder sign are reminders that social injustice still exists in this country.

This sign is going to come down; and it will be something we look back decades from now and will have discussions on why it was ever up in the first place. I come to you as a young, educated business man in this community and ask that you stay silent no longer. Speak up on something for your fellow man and for the good of our community. Lets be the curve and not let ourselves drag behind it. Be a good human, it is that simple.

For those that oppose the sign to come down I ask this: Whom are you asking for it to be left up for? What are we honoring or holding on to? Is it Hatred? Supremacy? Racism? Because that is how it can be perceived if you publicly attest.

I ask that others that ARE the working force in this community speak out on this hatred. I am calling out my colleagues, my friends, my family and the entire community. Become educated on what people are fighting for here, and educate others. Those of you that can't acknowledge we have these problems and want to deflect to all lives matter, or the rioting, or the looting, YOU ARE THE PROBLEM. Stop focusing on the recoil effects and start looking at what pulled the trigger in the first place. Have a discussion with a person of color and ask how they are feeling. LISTEN. Take a brief moment to learn a new perspective, and you will become aware to things you never knew existed I am certain of it.

I am not a politician, I am not out here trying to steer votes. I care about EVERYONE in this community and the children that are being raised in it. I am dedicated to using my social platform in this community to bring awareness and I ask everyone else to do the same. There are many battles and discussions to be had to create a better future and a stronger country, but for this community this sign is a good place to start. Please join me in bringing the necessary change; and sign up for to support.
