The closure of this school will cause overcrowding in already overburdened neighborhood schools. The option of sending these students to Lewis Open Magnet Elementary is not feasible for many parents, as Lewis is a great distance away from many Emerson families.
Emerson's building is not that old, it was only built in the 1950s. It is stucturally sound, and there is room to make additions onto the school if that needed to be done in the future. There are older schools that have been up for consideration.
Because Emerson is an exclusive magnet, the parents know that all of the families have chosen that environment for their children. The small size of the school is a bonus to many families, who like the close-knit, family atmosphere that Emerson provides.
There have to be better options than closing Wichita's first magnet school, or any elementary school. We owe it to our children to explore those options.
