Why we shouldn't ban gang patches, association, or assembly in New Zealand
Why this petition matters

National party leader Christopher Luxon has proposed new laws that would ban expression of gang patches, as well as restricting freedom of assembly and association for gang members in New Zealand.

Note that this petition does not make any statement regarding proposed firearm law changes. Nor does this petition make any statement against the National party or its leader as a whole.
Freedom of speech and freedom of expression means we must allow things that we find distasteful. If we are to protect such values, we must maintain the precedent that nobody's rights must be infringed upon, including gang members.
"Out of sight, out of mind" mentality does not solve anything. The real threat to our safety is when problematic views and ideas are forced 'underground' and only shared with other like-minded people. This is where further radicalisation occurs. It is through open and honest conversation that people's grievances can be aired and resolutions made. This is true not just for gangs, but for all groups or ideas that have the potential to cause harm.
Furthermore, gang patches help us to identify gang members in public and allow people to approach gang members with caution appropriate to each person's discretion.
Signing this petition sends a statement that we do not want to relinquish the freedom of expression, speech, association, and assembly of any citizen in New Zealand. For if we don't stand against the government's arbitrary banning of things it doesn't like, we will implicitly be welcoming more audacious attempts to subjugate us.
