Imagine you are sound asleep in bed, and suddenly you wake to a loud crash and an announcement "Cary Police." What would you think? In a state of shock and still not fully awake, you would wonder, "the police? Why are they here in the middle of the night. Hmm, maybe it's an intruder, but maybe it's really the police and they have the wrong address." In either case, this is a completely unnecessary scene.

Cary, NC allows the use of no-knock warrants despite the fact that they haven't used them in years. This outdated policy needs to be removed. Cary PD has already said it agrees that police offers should announce themselves before entering a home. So why not make this a requirement? Do I not deserve the right to have an officer knock on my door and show me his credentials prior to entering my home? I do not believe anyone should have the right to enter my home without my knowledge or permission, not a stranger, not a criminal, and not even the Cary PD. I think the Cary PD does an amazing job. But I do not think anyone, including the PD, should have the right to break into my home.

This is why I'm asking my fellow residents of Cary, NC to join me in the fight to end no-knock warrants in Cary. There is no need for these in our town. And I'm concerned that once word of this outdated policy gets out to criminals, they will use this against us. If someone breaks into my home in the middle of the night and proclaims they are the police, I will hesitate, as I can't be sure who is in my home.

No one deserves the right to enter my home without my permission - not criminals, and not the police. They can knock and allow me the opportunity to check and verify their credentials. Knowing that I live in a community where no-knock warrants exist really scares me - and it should scare you too. Please support me in protecting all Cary citizens and our families.
