In the U.S. 80 billion pounds of food are thrown away each year. Additionally, each year 40% of the US food supply is wasted, and the average person produces around 219 pounds of food annually. There are 37 million people in the US that suffer from food insecurity, and more than 80% of Americans discard fresh food because they are confused by expiration dates. Also, grocery stores will throw away perfectly good food because it “looks bad”. This cannot be allowed to continue. This food should be given to homeless shelters. Not only will this feed people who go hungry, but it will decrease waste of important resources like water, and energy. It will also decrease California’s nitrogen pollution. The food spoiling in landfills right now is producing nitrogen pollution that will lead to algae blooms and dead zones. This could be disastrous, and so we need to take action now. If the state of California were to mandate all grocery stores to give unsold food to homeless shelters there would be less pollution, and homeless people would get the good, nutritious food they deserve.
