East Whittier School District to offer early drop off and breakfast option

Currently a handful of schools in the East Whittier City School District do not have an Early Drop Off or Breakfast program. There are many households which have all responsible adults work. With the current drop-off time of 7:50AM, it makes it impossible for parents to personally drop off their children and make it to work on time. This also has a severe impact on traffic in school areas as parents/buses/pedestrians are all converging to the same location at the same exact time. This is also an issue of public safety as drivers can become agitated and impatient as children are crossing the streets.
We, the residents of Whittier, are pleading with the School Board to implement a before school program where children can be supervised on school grounds and have the option to purchase a nutritional breakfast. The children can either play or finish up homework while they wait for class to start. This will also give parents peace of mind knowing that they were able to personally drop off their children and see them walk through the gates.
With an increase in the homeless rate, we do not feel comfortable letting our children walk to school unsupervised. Parents are put in a bind by having to request special hours, get assistance from family and neighbors just to ensure that their children get to school safely. Most jobs do not start at 9AM. A 9-5 job is very rare these days. Most jobs start between 6AM-8AM. Not allowing children into the school until 7:50 AM does not give working parents ample time to drop off their children and make it to work on time.
Once again, we would like for the East Whittier City School District Board implement a before school drop-off program with a chance to purchase a nutritional breakfast. Thank you.
