Mike Curtis started this petition to SKY Soccer Board of Directors and

This petition is regarding the recent news of Coach Evan Sutherland’s termination. As parents of players on one of Coach Sutherland’s teams, we were shocked to hear the news. As paying members of a SKY Academy team, we feel we are entitled to an explanation as to the reason for the board’s decision, as are all of those who will undoubtedly be affected. Prior to Coach Sutherland’s assignment as Executive Director of Coaching and head coach for several teams, many members were contemplating leaving SKY for several reasons. Coach Sutherland single-handedly re-discovered confidence and love for the game for so many kids, and as parents we are grateful. There is no question of his coaching abilities, and he is a good person who shares the best interest of the kids in this league.

One would assume that with the board contemplating such an important decision which could potentially impart a negative consequence for the entire program, the community/parents who fund the program would be notified and/or be included in the decision-making process. This did not happen. As stakeholders in the success and progress of the SKY program, the community should be involved in any decision with such significance as the decision to terminate the Executive Director of Coaching. Does this club no longer “stand for one another” as represented in the logo? Where in this decision to take away a person’s position and livelihood without warning, did the SKY board display core values of the program? Was any consideration given to Coach Sutherland’s commitment, character, and excellence?  Less than six months ago, SKY Soccer publicly posted the following statement about Coach Sutherland:  "Your dedication to the Club and personal growth are a testament to the positive impact you are making here at SKY!  We all look forward to what the future holds for Southern KY Soccer!" Such a drastic change deserves explanation.

The SKY board did not consider the full extent of the impact of this decision. SKY players and parents alike have always been proud to have such a program in our community. This recent decision and the lack of forethought in its far-reaching repercussions is disconcerting. A decision of such magnitude is worthy of much more than a routine monthly meeting with undisclosed topics of discussion. As funding stakeholders, and long-term contributors to the success of this program, we the parents of SKY players are requesting the SKY Board of Directors hold a special meeting to allow parent, player, and community involvement in the decision-making process. The continued success of this program is otherwise, at risk.

Please show your support by signing your name to this petition. Thank you!

***UPDATE***  Please read the email from the SKY Soccer president, sent out less than one year ago.  What could have changed so drastically in less than a year to warrant the termination??  In closing, Helbig states, "When you notice something that may help the club or something that you feel was not the best idea, please let us know".

Hello SKY family. I am Shawn Helbig, the current president of SKY Soccer. I wanted to take a minute to tell you about a few things that are happening at SKY. First off, I want to thank you all for a great spring rec season. This has been one of the best springs at SKY. We have received tons of positive feedback about our end of season tournament and hope you all enjoyed it.

SKY has been in a transition period over the past two years. I hope that many of you have had a chance to meet and speak with Evan Sutherland, our Director of Coaching (DOC). Evan has been working hard over the past two years to expand our competitive programs and we are starting to see the fruit of his labor. This week starts the annual State Cup Tournament and SKY is expected to shine during this event. Good luck to all of our teams. SKY is now the largest soccer club in the Commonwealth. We are fortunate that our very own Bob Drake is now the President of KY Soccer. We are working hard to grow the competitive side of the club.

Please take a minute to visit our website (http://www.skysoccer.org and learn about what is happening at SKY. Our competitive tryouts are just around the corner. We have noticed that many of our rec program players are reaching a level of play that would make them ready for our competitive teams. If your children are interested in playing at the competitive level, I encourage them to come to tryouts in June. Also please take a minute to learn about our Youth Development Program (YPD). Cory Dan has joined us as an Assistant DOC to head the YDP program to help develop and identify some of our promising younger players. If you are the parent of a 7, 8 or 9 year old, please consider our YDP for your daughter or son.

In closing I would like to say this club is our club and we could not do it without the massive amount of support from our families and our parent coaches, who give their time for our rec teams. SKY will continue to make this the best experience possible for our children. To that end, we ask for your help and feedback. We try many things to make the club better and we know not all of those things will be a perfect fit. When you
notice something that may help the club or something that you feel was not the best idea, please let us know.

You can email the club or talk to myself or Evan. We want you and your children to enjoy every minute of their time here at SKY.

Shawn Helbig
