Why this petition matters
The COVID-19 virus has affected millions of people, including, families, workers, and students. The COVID-19 virus has made businesses close, unemployment rate rise, and even shut down the majority of universities giving students less than a week to pack up everything they own into three or four suitcases. The majority of universities informed their students immediately of the cancelation of face to face classes, while Wheeling University left students in the dark for two weeks. In this case, Wheeling University gave students four days to put their items in storage units, schedule flights home, and pack their belongings. This left many students having to throw away the majority of their items, such as bathroom products, food, furniture, clothing, electronics, and any remaining items they could not fit into their 28 to 32 inch suitcases. Students were forced to throw away these items because of how expensive shipping is or not having enough money to buy more suitcases. Along with giving students a four-day notice to pack their belongings and leave, Wheeling University has not given any student refund for the room and board for the month of April or May. Why is Wheeling University profiting from students and families during this pandemic, when the majority of families are being laid off from their jobs and are barely able to provide for their families? Students pay around 5,006 dollars for housing and 3,990 dollars for meals totaling to 8,996 for their room and board. This is a huge amount of money and it is only fair that Wheeling University reimburses students for what they have paid for.
