Meagan Hudak started this petition to Wheaton Police Department and

We are writing to request the city of Wheaton’s top priority and concern over a dangerous intersection for families with small children in Stonehedge Neighborhood.

Last night my husband and 5 year old daughter were midway across the crosswalk at Brighton and Sherwood on their way to Brighton Park when a Jeep came fast and furious down Brighton and zoomed around the corner. My husband had to push my daughter out of the way to prevent them both from being plowed over. It continues to replay in my mind and the close call is unacceptable. If we have a park placed in a neighborhood to attract children, then we need to do what we can to protect families who are utilizing this play space.

I have three small children 5 years old and younger and this is not the first time this has happened to me or many other families in our neighborhood. It is a constantly discussed concern among parents. People have been hit by cars and thankfully, nothing has been fatal yet.

WHY IS THIS INTERSECTION DANGEROUS?
The crosswalk to this Brighton Park is right on a curve where cars are typically parked creating a blind spot. When soccer season is in session it becomes even more dangerous. All this paired with the fact that Brighton is known as a cut through street in Wheaton and people are reckless as they zip around this curve truly puts families and young children at risk. It’s terrifying for me as a mom and last night’s close call has stirred a fire in me and I will not stop pursuing this until a safety measure is put in place.

WHAT WE ARE REQUESTING:
Speed bumps with a flashing light and /or a stop sign at Brighton and Sherwood would be very helpful in alerting drivers of young families crossing. We cannot afford to not take action to protect families in our neighborhood.

Thank you in advance for working with us to accomplish this safety measure.
