Wheaton College Administration,

With my signature, I indicate my affirmation of the following:

Wheaton College should implement a composting program to divert food scraps generated on campus, particularly plate waste and food scraps produced in Anderson Commons. Ideally, this would take the form of a formal contract with Lakeshore Recycling Systems, a waste management company that would pick up the food scraps generated in Anderson Commons. This service would divert several tons of organic waste from the landfill every month, and would open the door to using compostable utensils and packaging in Stupe and Sam’s.

If Wheaton College initiated a program to start food scrap composting, I would be willing to take responsibility for composting my food scraps. If Wheaton entered into a contract with Lakeshore, I would be willing to scrape my plate waste into compost bins by the tray return in Anderson Commons. I am also interested in dropping off the organic waste I generate in my apartment, house, or dorm room in designated drop-off sites.

Rationale

I understand that food waste from Wheaton College goes to a landfill, so it is unable to regenerate into the earth as natural fertilizer.

I believe that food scrap composting at Wheaton College will help students to form habits that they can continue into adulthood.

As a Christian, I believe we are called as Christians to love our global neighbors by taking care of Creation.

Most colleges of Wheaton’s size and caliber have already implemented similar programs. Therefore, if our school wants to be a leader in environmental stewardship, Wheaton College students need to take action to reduce food waste.

Respectfully,

Wheaton College Student Body
