Philip Wong started this petition to Westwood High School

Over the past few weeks, the Westwood HOSA club has started the election process to decide the 2021-2022 officers that will run the club. For context, the officer selection process includes a general election that includes all eligible club members followed by an interview if certain election quotas are met. Despite the hard work from both students running in the election and those hosting the election process, it was decided on May 5th, 2021 that the election process was unfair due to the virtual learning environment and the officer election process would be postponed to fall of 2021.

Normally, there would be no argument if the announcement of postponing the election was sent out before the election process and voting had begun, but this is not the case. Voting for the officers closed on April 30th, 2021, 5 days before the announcement of the postponement. If there were any complaints regarding the fairness of the election process, should they not have been voiced and considered before students put time and effort into this election? Furthermore, many other Westwood High School clubs have also carried out their election process for their respective  2021-2022 officers, which calls into question: Why should HOSA be singled out as having to postpone our election?

As both a current member of the HOSA officer team, it also concerns me greatly how the postponing of deciding on the 2021-2022 officer team will affect the duties that will be necessary for next year. The delay in the officer selection process will also delay our club activities. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic this year, we’ve already experienced an interruption of the norm, resulting in reduced efficiency and less work put out compared to previous years. A further delay will only amplify the damage done by our current situation.

My hope is that with your help, those who have put in their previous time and effort preparing for the Westwood HOSA officer elections will not see the work they’ve done go to waste. With enough signatures, hopefully our voice will be heard and acknowledged, thank you.
