Koryn Stevens started this petition to Westview School Corporation and

As a former student and after reading the testimonies of alumni before me, I can vouch that this has taken place for far too long. Nothing is done to mitigate the situation, or even make students feel safe and accepted. A single guidance counselor who is tasked with planning the schedules and academics among students is not enough. A nurse untrained and unhelpful in the realm of mental health is not enough. As someone who works in mental health every day and someone who struggled with depression at Westview (which I was told to keep going to class to "distract" myself), I understand the importance of advocacy and NOTHING is done to help at Westview. When I attended years ago, teachers would not assist and even contributed to the problem through gossip amongst themselves, which eventually made its way to the ears of the students. Even the superintendent, who was the junior high school principal at the time, was unwilling to hear the complaints of students and made them afraid to come to him with issues. Is another suicide going to be what it takes for the staff and management to realize that so many students are being brushed under the rug in order to focus on the athletics, or maintaining a superb academic record? Even now after this tragic event, the poor student who took his life is STILL being made fun of. However, this is not an issue of students being "mean" to one another. This is an issue of poor communication and education among staff on the importance of understanding mental health and supporting ALL students... not just the ones that give the school a good name. Students must also be taught the importance of maintaining proper mental health and feel as though their needs are met through the school staff. As far as the perpetrators, Westview must actually go through with consequences and let it be known that this type of behavior is not tolerated.
