Nicholas Soukeras started this petition to Superintendent, Weston Public Schools William S. McKersie, Ph.D. and

This petition is established as an appeal to the Weston Public Schools Board of Education (BOE) to implement a full-day, full-time, in-class, five-day-per-week schooling scenario for the Kindergarten students of Hurlbutt Elementary School.

The current hybrid scenario introduced and implemented by the Weston PS to the BOE for Kindergarten students has resulted in an average of eleven (11) hours of in-class instruction per week, with an alternating fifteen (15) minutes of remote instruction limiting young students to lengthy greetings and brief introductions to material for which their developing minds are starving to learn. This scenario may be adaptable for more senior students, who are able to independently navigate through their assignments, and who are more apt and capable to utilize iPads and e-learning applications, but it is a disruption and impediment to those younger children who have yet to learn to read the word "is" or count past twenty.

Apart from education concerns, there are clear psychological implications for young children who are encountering their first classroom (and in many senses social) experience. The importance of social interaction in early childhood development not only impacts the social skills which teach our children how to practice sharing, how to cooperate, how to take turns, and how to show respect for others, it also teaches them how to curb aggressive behavior, control their impulses, develop language and self-esteem, and promote creativity and imagination—all critical skills that will allow them to mature into functioning, well-rounded, independent members of society. It is without saying that these critical skills cannot flourish over a fifteen-minute Zoom meeting.

For those families with two working parents and limited and/or unaffordable day care options, the impact of a hybrid schedule on home life can also result in any number of challenging if not unmanageable personal scenarios which not only put their professional lives at risk, but may inadvertently affect public school enrollment in favor of private/homeschooling options.

The signers of this petition strongly urge that the Weston Public School system reexamine their current Kindergarten schooling scenario in favor of a full-day, full-time, in-class, five-day-per-week schooling schedule—to be implemented without delay—so that our children can begin developing as expected and in accordance with their fundamental right to receive a free, public education, unimpeded.
