When Westminster Dog Show fired PEDIGREE Dog Food Company ((the Westminster Sponsor of 24 years) we lost one of the great advocates of dog/animal welfare with their TV advertisements directed to the dog-loving audience of Westminster Dog Show. FOUR MILLION dogs a year enter Shelters and only half make it out. PEDIGREE ran thoughtful, sincere, sensitive TV ads during the Show, calling attention to the plight of homeless dogs. Animal shelters throughout the Country have thanked Pedigree for promoting dog adoptions. The Pedigree Company also contributes millions of dollars to the pet adoption cause. Pedigree must be commended and patronized for the extraordinary work they have done.
Westminster DID NOT want attention called to the homeless dog! TV Host DAVID FREI becomes a CARICATURE of the cruel images portrayed by Charles Dickens of the "Very Rich"; not only would they neither comfort nor assist the poor in any way--they rather actively turned away from and refused acknowledgement of "the Needy Poor"! Case in Point: DAVID FREI said: "Show me an ad of a dog with a smile. Don't try to shame me...we told them (Pedigree) that and they ignored us.".
Purina Dog Food Company who accepted the offer to replace PEDIGREE and agreed to SCREEN OUT any needy or underprivileged dogs from their ads, should be shamed and boycotted by animal lovers.
