Make PE A Choice For Athletes

Make PE A Choice For Athletes
Why this petition matters

Student athletes should be given a choice whether they have access to advanced level classes or extra physical activity. At Westford Academy, four semesters of PE is a graduation requirement. The PE requirement takes up an elective spot that could be used for another academically focused class. Athletes should have a choice of taking an elective over a PE class. Athletes are prevented from exploring additional academic interests or coursework that may better prepare them for college because they are required to take PE. The current PE requirements are outdated given the access to a variety of organized sports in school and throughout the surrounding communities. Ultimately, Student athletes shouldn't be required to take PE classes because they are actively participating in school sports; therefore getting daily exercise.
I play on the girls JV soccer team and plan to participate in track for WA in the spring. Taking AP Biology, Calculus, and AP Chemistry is important to me because I want to be a veterinarian. As a multi-sport athlete I feel that the PE requirements prevent me from reaching my academic goals because I have to fulfill the current PE requirements instead of being able to take advanced classes that will help me prepare for college and career readiness.
