Western Isles NHS Health Board are threatening to close the APU ward in Western Isles Hospital. This ward offers support for every person on this island if and when they have mental health issues that require professional inpatient care.
They are proposing a 'redesign ' of services which will mean that in the future, anyone needing inpatient support will be sent off to the mainland like some outlaw. This is categorically the worst option for anyone suffering from mental health issues.
Imagine you are suicidal or your family member is and there is no safe place for them? No professional support?
Imagine you are having a psychotic episode or your family member is and they are at danger of harming themselves or others and there is no safe place for them?
Please stand with me and support our right to be treated like humans.
After everything this island has gone through in the last year we need to make sure we're moving forward with our mental health services NOT BACKWARDS!
The APU ward needs to stay open as it is and we need more mental health services on the island. This is a nationwide issue and can't be ignored.
A survey should be available for the public to give their opinion and a public meeting should be held before any decisions are made final.
I was told that they engaged with patients, carers and health professionals in 2015/2016 but I, as a carer, had no communication from them. It's also 2018 and a lot has happened in the few years - they need to re-engage and this time include everyone.
Gordon Jamieson claims that the above is not the case but if you read the section on APU ward in 'Mental Health Services Redesign' plan you will find otherwise. They are only keeping it open until they make an agreement with somewhere on the mainland.
