Western, be fair to postdoctoral researchers
Postdoctoral researchers are critical to the high quality of research conducted at Western University. They and their families make personal sacrifices to come to Western for an indefinite term and dedicate themselves wholly in advancing the Western's reputation for excellence.
Postdocs are seeking basic improvements to wages and health care which would keep Western in line with other leading research institutions in Ontario. At a minimum salary of $31,840, it is difficult to make ends meet. Basic health care needs, such as dental and vision care for researchers and their families, are delayed and avoided because they present a significant financial burden to many postdocs and their families.

I am writing to express my support for fair treatment of postdoctoral researchers employed by Western University. Postdoctoral researchers are highly trained and experienced and their expertise is essential to uphold the high quality of research Western University is known for – but we are in danger of falling behind.
I urge you to increase wages for postdoctoral researchers employed by Western University in line with current settlements for postdoctoral researchers at other universities in Ontario. It is vital that Western University offers equivalent compensation and continues to attract extraordinary postdoctoral researchers.
I urge you to increase the minimum salary for postdoctoral researchers employed by Western University. The current minimum salary of $31,840 is not sufficient for individuals living in London and does not cover rent, student loan repayments, living and childcare expenses. Annual living costs are over $80,000 (Statistics Canada). The low income cut-off for a family of three is $32,065 (Statistics Canada).
I urge you to discontinue the practice of gross salary reductions for postdoctoral researchers transitioning to employee status. Western University should be fair and pay its share of the cost of employing extraordinary postdoctoral researchers.
Finally, I urge you to implement health benefits for postdoctoral researchers employed by Western University in line with those of other postdoctoral workers in Ontario. Postdocs report delaying health care until they can visit their home country and being forced to choose between dental and vision care for themselves or their families. Prescription drug, health and dental services are significant costs for some of our most vulnerable postdoctoral researchers.
Postdoctoral researchers at Western University deserve fair and equitable treatment, in line with other employees at Western and a growing number of universities in Ontario. This includes minimum salaries enabling postdoctoral researchers to cover their cost of living and wages and health benefits. I trust that as an internationally renowned research institution Western University will do the right thing and treat our postdoctoral employees fairly.
