Lee Cowen started this petition to West Sussex County Council (West Sussex County Council)

The county council made a decision that they would reduce the gritting of our roads in cold weather from 41% to 31% of the network across West Sussex. Predictably it’s our urban area from Worthing through Sompting, Lancing, Shoreham, Southwick and Fishersgate that will be disproportionately worst hit. It's a recklessly short sighted measure. There's no recognition that people won't be able to get on to the roads that have been cleared if their roads are iced up, not to mention the safety concerns! These cuts could well result in accidents and fatalities. Many of our routes in this area are steep and some are bus routes! Some are safer routes to school, some are routes that may prevent carers from visiting their patients. That's cutting off a whole number of vulnerable people.

This is failure to consult, a failure to publicise, a failure in decision making and announcing it in the winter period means there is no time to prepare.

The county council seek to save £150,000 with this measure. That's a fraction of the overall budget, so we urge the county council to look elsewhere for savings (how about fewer consultancy fees) and preferably ones that put the safety of residents first.

These are the routes in Shoreham and Lancing where gritting is to be stopped.
